Over the last decade, teen smoking has been on the decline. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, only 1 in 25 high school students smoke cigarettes daily in 2018. But as cigarette smoking seems to be on the decline, another method of nicotine use has managed to hook today’s youth – Juuling.
Here’s what you need to know about the vaping trend.
What is Juul?
Juul is a battery-operated smoking device that contains cartridges filled with a nicotine-based liquid. It looks like a USB device and comes with fruity flavors that appeal to teens.
Juul is the most popular brand of e-cigarettes today. It has become so popular that teens are using “Juuling” as a verb.
Juuling has become a teen thing
The legal age to buy Juul is 18. But in many case, these devices are being used by teenagers younger than that.
Since Juuls are small, discreet, and closely resembles a USB, they can easily be used in school. Teachers reported that students use it in the restrooms, hallways, and even in the classrooms. They can easily take a hit, blow the fruit-smelling puff of smoke into their jackets, and continue with their school work in a matter of second.
Some students would even share the device with their friends. This encourages younger and non-smoking students to try Juuling.
Juul is highly addictive
E-cigarrettes were originally developed to help adults curb their nicotine addiction. What people fail to realize, however, is that the nicotine contained in vape juice is as addictive as nicotine derived from cigarettes.
All Juul e-cigarettes contain a high level of nicotine. In fact, one juul pod has the nicotine equivalent of a pack of cigarette. Experts worry that the high nicotine content in Juul can boost addiction and other health risks.
What if your teen is already juuling?
In the event you discover that your teen is already using juul, resist the urge to freak out. Warning and threatening your kids with punishment won’t solve the problem. Keep your emotions in check and talk openly and honestly with your kids about juuling.
Engage in conversation that will help them understand the health hazards associated with vaping. Also, try to gain an understanding of the issues that might trigger vape use. Once you do, you’ll be better equipped to address the problem. Take the time to listen – really listen – to what they say.
