Have you ever had something good happen and found yourself waiting for it to go wrong?

Maybe your relationship is in a good place. Work is going well. You finally have a little more peace in your life. You should be able to enjoy it, but instead, a thought creeps in:

“Something bad is probably going to happen.”

You may even feel guilty for being happy. Part of you worries that if you get too comfortable or excited, you will somehow set yourself up for disappointment.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. And there is something important I want you to know: enjoying something good does not make something bad more likely to happen.

Anxiety Can Make Happiness Feel Unsafe

When you have been through difficult or uncertain experiences, it can become hard to fully relax when things are going well.

Your mind may start looking for signs that something is about to change. You might overthink a conversation, worry about losing someone you love, or imagine everything that could go wrong.

It can feel like you are protecting yourself by staying prepared.

But expecting something bad does not actually protect you from it. It can simply make you experience today’s happiness through tomorrow’s fear.

You don’t have to give up a good moment just because you cannot guarantee what happens next.

You Don’t Have to Feel Guilty for Being Happy

Some people believe that enjoying life when others are struggling, or when life has been difficult in the past, is somehow wrong.

You may think, “I shouldn’t get too happy,” or “I don’t want to get my hopes up.”

But happiness is not a reward you have to earn. You are allowed to experience good moments without apologizing for them or waiting for them to end.

And enjoying your life does not mean you are ignoring reality.

You can know that difficult things may happen someday and still let yourself enjoy what is happening today.

Try Coming Back to What Is True Right Now

When you notice yourself worrying about what might happen, gently bring your attention back to the present.

Ask yourself:

“Is something actually wrong right now, or am I afraid that something might go wrong?”

That small question can help you separate what is happening from what anxiety is predicting.

You can also let yourself enjoy the moment without trying to figure out how long it will last. If you’re laughing with someone you love, let yourself laugh. If you’re proud of something you’ve accomplished, let yourself feel proud.

You don’t need certainty about the future to appreciate the present.

You Are Allowed to Enjoy Your Life

Part of healing can be learning that you don’t have to stay on guard just because life has been hard before.

Therapy can give you a safe place to explore why it feels difficult to trust good experiences and why your mind keeps preparing for something to go wrong. Together, we can work on building more comfort with uncertainty and helping you feel more present in your own life.

Something good happening today does not need to come with a warning.

You are allowed to enjoy what is good, even when you don’t know what tomorrow will bring.
