These days, there is a disorder or illnesses for almost everything. But there’s a syndrome you might be suffering from without you knowing it. It’s called stay-at-home mom syndrome.
Working moms feel guilty. They feel guilty for not being able to spend as much time with their kids, for missing out on some school activities or for not being able to help their kids with their assignments because they’re just too tired to do so. But believe it or not, stay-at-home moms feel guilty too – a lot.
Studies suggest that about 57% of women who stay at home feel guilty. And it’s not because their husbands make them feel that way, it’s just how they feel with regards to how they perform their duties, for spending their spouse’s money, for not being able to contribute to their expenses and a few other reasons.
Most of you probably didn’t think twice about buying a new pair of shoes or a bag when you were single. But now that you have children and you’re no longer working, you may feel guilty about buying stuff for yourself. For working moms, shopping every once in a while is not much of an issue. But for families who rely on just one income, that’s another story.
Sure, staying at home means every member of the family is being fed well, the house is well taken care of and most importantly, the kids are healthy, but that means they also have limited funds to spend. If they do buying things for themselves, go out with friends or watch a movie, they fear that they’ll be labelled as selfish, self-indulgent and unproductive.
According to studies, stay-at-home moms are more likely to suffer from depression as compared to working moms. This is because most of them feel like they’re failing. The house is almost always a mess, they didn’t learn any new cooking skills, they fail to get the dishes done regularly and they can’t even dress up nicely.
There will be days when you don’t get everything done, and that’s okay. If you feel guilty because you think you’re failing, we urge you to re-consider what the job truly entails. Don’t think that you’re failing just because the house is a mess. Your job is to take good care of your kids. You are not a stay-at-home mom, maid and cook. You are not a superwoman.
Being a mother is one of the toughest jobs in the world. If you fee exhausted, then go ahead and take a break. Make yourself a cup of coffee, take a hot shower or call a friend. Don’t be too hard on yourself.
