Have you ever thought, “I should be over this by now”?

Maybe something happened years ago, but certain situations still bring up strong feelings. A difficult conversation may make you anxious. Being criticized may feel especially painful. You may have trouble trusting someone, even when they have given you no reason not to.

You might even wonder why something from the past still affects you when so much time has passed.

The truth is, healing does not always happen simply because time passes.

The Past Can Show Up in the Present

Experiences from the past can shape the way we respond to things today.

You may become guarded during conflict because of what you experienced before. You may expect people to leave, have trouble trusting others, or feel the need to protect yourself even when you are not in danger.

Sometimes, you may not even realize that a present situation is reminding you of something from your past. You simply notice that your reaction feels stronger than you expected.

This does not mean something is wrong with you. It does not mean you are failing to move on. It may simply mean that part of your experience still needs attention and care.

What Can You Do When the Past Shows Up?

When an old feeling comes up, try to notice it without judging yourself. Instead of asking, “Why am I reacting like this?” you might say, “Something about this situation is bringing up a strong response for me.”

Give yourself a moment before reacting. Take a few slow breaths. Step away if you can. Give yourself time to understand what you’re feeling.

You can also gently ask yourself: “What does this situation remind me of?”

You don’t need to have all the answers. Simply becoming aware of the connection can be a meaningful first step.

And try not to pressure yourself to be completely “over it.” Healing isn’t always about forgetting what happened. It is about being able to experience the present without the past controlling your response.

You Can Move Forward Without Pretending It Never Happened

What happened to you can be part of your story without defining who you are. You don’t have to erase the past to move forward. You can learn to feel safer, trust yourself, and respond differently over time.

If something from your past continues to affect your relationships, emotions, or daily life, therapy can provide a safe space to work through those experiences and understand yourself with more compassion.

You are allowed to heal at your own pace. You don’t have to forget what happened to move forward. You can heal while still honoring what you’ve been through.
